They did, the problem is they also advertised it as being a day one gamepass release. Why buy a $60 game (that'll drop to $10 within a year on amazon) when you can redeem your bing points for a month of game pass to play it instead?
That doesn't mean game pass is bad, but it certainly does show why so many game companies in the late 00s/early 10s did what they could to destroy rentals. That's also why Xbone initially announced no used games. PS4 was supposed to do the same, but Sony went on stage the next day so they had time to back out of that deal. Ironic how nowadays everybody's abandoned the concept of even owning games entirely in this all-digital age, and that the idea of "renting" is appalling to most people.
