"Ballistae ready!" Their commanding officer shouted.
"Open fire!" You shouted back as you had seen the same thing as the gnoll chieftain had. Your men weren't ready and gnolls matched them in numbers. You had to take the initiative.
The four ballistae deployed between your Alteracis and Regional Defenders to your right send out four large iron tipped wooden poles at the gnolls. To your and everyone's annoyance, the results of the first volley were poor. One of them struck a tree half-way to the target, two flew over and past the gnolls and only one found a gnoll to hit. Though while the poor creature was torn asunder in near instant, it was only one gnoll.
The gnoll chieftain bellowed once more and the mass of gnolls lurched forward. Surrounded by a pair of gnolls carrying staffs and wearing dark cloaks and hoods, the chieftain led the gnolls at marching pace towards you. Twangs of crossbows could be heard and then screams of pain as men fell over.
As the tree that had been hit fell over, the battle was upon you.
Alric:
>At the frontline with Royal Foot Guards causing most havoc.
>Moving wherever the battle is the most urgent and where you are needed.
>Seeking the gnoll chieftain and dueling it
Ranged:
>Concentrate on the armoured gnoll fighters, ease the pressure on your footmen.
>Counter the gnoll crossbows and keep their heads down.
>Fire at will, choose own targets.
Mages:
>Target the largest concentration of gnolls with the fire magic.
>Influence the battle with Slow and other tricks.
>Counterspelling any gnoll magic.
>Supporting you specifically.
Cavalry:
>Immediately charge the gnoll flank to take off pressure from the footmen.
>Have them move through your ranks and charge the gnoll center head on.
>Keep them back, their time as the hammer is not yet.
Langston:
>Reinforcements are not yet needed.
>They are needed.
QM: Plenty to vote.
