He's not the MC for one, he's the annoying sidekick to the grumpy old man and he does that job admirably.
Also he doesn't wear his generational trauma on his sleeve, it isn't until an hour into the movie when it hits you he has some shit going on in his life and that's why he acts the way he acts.
