The Manga has WAY MORE Attention to detail than the show did. If you notice, Towa's hair also grows through the series because none of them are stopping to get haircuts anywhere. Same goes for their clothes, the pure-white school uniform Towa starts with got muddied and ruined basically by the second volume, and she's been gradually replacing it with real armor ever since. Meanwhile the anime would have her roll through mud and she would stand up and her uniform and hair would be fresh-white.

The Manga also has a better story and characters but that's another conversation.
