It's kind of an extension of the 4chan compulsion to have a "rival" of some kind, first it was Something Awful because 4chan is a direct offshoot of Moot getting thrown out of there for being a filthy weeb, then it was furries from paying huge amounts of attention to self-professed attention whores, then it was news outlets like FOX with hackers on steroids, then it was Reddit for some reason (and still is Reddit in the background), then My Little Pony which I'm still not sure why it got a board here, then game journalists with Gamergate, concurrent with /pol/ forcing meme insults and rivals simultaneously with cuckolds, leftists and transsexuals so hard that even the US government has old people trying to rail against trannies and flailing in rage when their votership tanks because nobody cares about tranny hate no matter how many men say there are totally rape gangs prowling womens' restrooms (largely a rebadge of "Muslim rape gangs" and "Indian rape gangs" talking points from European and British conservative groups)
