Its genetic mostly, some people are just genetically rigged to be alcoholics. The alcohol industry basically operates on the same ideas as the freemium game industry, they know that the vast majority of people will only engage with the product very casually and spend barely any money on it, they're after the whales that have a predisposition for getting dangerously addicted to it.

Drinking is literally one of the most dangerous and addictive drugs, to the point where you can actually die if you just try to quit drinking after being a heavy drinker. But it gets away with this shit because the average person isn't going to get addicted to it, so when they see someone that has gotten horribly addicted they just say "well I was able to drink in moderation, shame on them for not having any self control!", but the whole industry is built around the fact that its not a matter of self control for these people and they genuinely can't help it.

The more you look at the alcohol industry, the more you start to think that maybe prohibition was the right idea.
Alcohol is also more likely to cause cancer, and more types of cancer, than smoking is, but we never talk about that.
