Armenia's Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan: the pro-Russian movement "Sacred Struggle" attempted to carry out a coup and seize power in the country.
Armenia is steadily moving out of Russia's sphere of influence, which is why Russia is engaging in destabilizing activities and will try to take control of the country.
In the past year or so, Armenia has decided to join the EU, has signed a Strategic Partnership Charter with the United States and decided to leave the CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization that includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan).
Pashinyan stated that "law enforcement officers thwarted a large-scale and insidious plan by the criminal-oligarchic clergy to the situation in the Republic of Armenia," the goal of which was a coup d’état.
According to the Armenian Investigative Committee, members of the movement had been preparing their plan to seize power since November 2024. To this end, they intended to form 200-250 strike groups of 25 people each, mainly composed of former military personnel and police officers. They also acquired explosive devices and other tools "for committing acts of terrorism," the committee claims.
According to the agency, the conspirators planned to paralyze transportation by causing car accidents, explosions, and arson attacks; to organize widespread power and internet outages; to fire on buildings; and to carry out other actions posing threats to citizens' lives and health.
