I'm supposed to believe that a species figures out how to travel space but are defeated by locked wooden doors and they die if they touch water.

I could see a species evolving in a way where water is poison to them, but having created ships that shield them from the dangers of space and advanced technology, and knowing water is something in the universe, you'd think they'd just make a suit to protect against it.
