don't be afraid to take a short commute. find somewhere vaguely in between all the points you want to visit and prioritize scenery and building space. you could just throw down a productivity cube on all of the major resources, but that's game-y like you said and kinda undermines a major conceit of the genre, which is making a digital home away from home.
