The event was the culmination of violent street clashes between pro-Maidan and anti-Maidan activists, both sides employing improvised weaponry, which escalated into a catastrophic fire at the House of Trade Unions where anti-Maidan protestors had barricaded themselves. While the outcome was tragic, labeling it a targeted ethnic cleansing "just because they were Russian" oversimplifies a multi-faceted civil conflict into a single-variable equation. The victims were multi-ethnic residents of Odesa, not a group rounded up by a state apparatus for extermination.
