I beat the game as France, and had a great time doing it. My Empire stretched from England to Spain and into Germany.

I'm a massive, massive fan of the TWWH series but I will always miss the pure and unadulterated SOVL of old Historical Total War.
Rome and Medieval II had some incredible voice work and talent behind the cinematics and battle announcers which I miss dearly.
My favorite memories from those games are the Heroic Victory lines where the announcer gasses you up and you can hear genuine emotion and excitement. The young Roman announcer's voice almost cracking with joy as he cries "ROMAN ARMS HAVE CRUSHED THE ENEMY! :D", or the Greek announcer proclaiming your feat as a "Heroic victory, worthy of a GREAT general!", the battlefield speeches that were programmed based on your specific general's traits and history, it just had so much heart.
You could feel the love of history and the relish that the developers had for the struggle of the great heroes of times long gone.
The new games are very pretty and well designed, they flow a lot better and they look amazing in screenshots, they're a lot of fun to mod and have thousands of hours of gameplay potential but....
They just don't have that level of care anymore. I can tell with them, that the objective going into development was pure profit, not passion, and thats something you can't hide no matter how much you may try.
