Superhero comics are about superheroes, relationships are just there to make the characters relatable...and chances are that you've had a girlfriend (or at least fantasized about it). But what's the probability of you having gone to a gay bar or dressed up like a woman? You can't relate to that shit. So superheroes shouldn't be gay.
So what about background characters? Well, they shouldn't have enough panel time to where their relationships matter. A subtle "sorry I'm gay" could work (but it's still not necessary), but having a man dress up like a tranny and becoming the center of attention just ruins it.
