You'd had a point, but that remark doesn't limit itself to just the pairings, but Mario's character relationships and subtextual writing in general; and it's not a recent thing either, it's always been like this. Conveying character relationships isn't exactly Nintendo's forte nor their concern as far as Mario goes, which you can tell when you compare the exception exhibits (LM, M&L, SMG, SMO, PM...) with the norm exhibits (pretty much the rest of the franchise).
Also, I don't think you can really say there's been a shift from Mario and Peach's relationships when not only the profiles -quite ironically- emphasize their relationship, but when both of them continue to share screentime in promo material to this day.
