I'll put aside my own "DT PvP sucks" opinion and try to be objective.

There's an issue with both reward/incentive to play and the matchmaking structure. People don't really have a draw into the mode unless they really enjoy it. There really aren't any rewards. If I were to compare it to PvE, it'd be like if each Ultimate that released came with the exact same weapon and title reward. This means that the pool of players coming into the mode winds up pretty small. This is an issue, because not only do you need ten people queueing to be able to play it, but they have to be within a certain rank of each other.

The matchmaking brackets in this game lead to dead queues at certain ranks. Once the initial flood of people trying at the beginning of a patch dries up, queues really start to die. First you start to only be able to play at prime time at night (or ungodly late night if you're high ranked). Eventually, people get bored of needing to wait for a certain time or a certain day to just be able to play, and then they stop queueing up entirely. This creates entire ranks of deadzones, mostly Platinum, where you literally can not longer get matches. If Platinum is dead, that means that new players can't hit the high ranks and get completely brick walled at Plat where the queues MIGHT pop for a few hours once every few weeks.
This combined with Dawntrail having low player numbers just means actually trying to play the game is impossible.

There are more problems I could go into but I've already yapped more than anyone will read.
