I'm going to get shit for this since 90% of the time this and its second adaptation gets brought up it's usually associated with that schizo or summons him into a thread
But I unironically prefer the 2003 version over the manga since imo it had a superior atmosphere, antagonist, final arc and with the movie that released later a better ending
I swear Sho Aikawa is the master of taking over someone else's project even if he allegedly hates having to diverge from authors' original plans, he did the same thing with Kamen Rider Blade which ended massively improving the story
