I study archaeology, and I've had to study the ways of life of the communities of the Puna and the Andean highlands, a dry, arid, and very inhospitable area. Even in a place so hostile to human life, communities have thrived. And I'm not just talking about small groups of hunter-gatherers, but about villages with agriculture, workshops, and even fortifications. True human intellect and creativity shine through especially when our survival depends on it.
