In the EU they slowly tore the Empire apart, taking over their fleets and turning them against them, and they even took Coruscant pretty quickly in a surprise attack by out-rusing an Imperial ruse.

After that the Remnant moved it's capital to Bastion, an industrial shithole that was right at the edge of the galaxy and only controlled a few sectors in the Outer Rim.
