It seems many people don't register them as a threat for some reason. Plus shit running at you takes priority instinctively. I've seen players fighting one mauler while a bunch of gunners are shooting at them.
I try to go for them first and specials, yet team sometimes runs past single melee dude to fight a group of other melee dudes, and those loners re-aggro on me, so now I need to deal with that instead of shooting.
