Everyone has their own favorite, but Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song is easily my favorite.

For a game to start with? I recommend one that interests you. Final Fantasy Legend I and II are probably the easiest points to enter from due to them being linear RPGs. The only thing you'll grapple with are the racial growth mechanics, download the manuals PDF online for it.

Romancing SaGa 3 is cited as a good starting point. Play that if you want natural growth mechanics while not having your hand held on what to do while having 'most' of the game easy going.

SaGa Frontier is possibly one of the easier entries in the series, but new comers still need to grapple with racial growth mechanics and the game tends to give you very little in hints towards progression at some points along with various instances of points of no return. A lot of newbies tend to get stuck with the points of no return.

Romancing SaGa 2 can be a decent starting point because while it can be non-linear, you have to open the world up first. RS2 limits what you can do first so it allows you to get a grip on story progression easier. But the final boss can be hard and many people have entered it unprepared.

Scarlet Grace and Emerald Beyond are very battle focused, but has an in game manual for everything which wasn't typical for SaGa, but they aren't the retro games.
