Like yeah no shit you idiot you designed a romanticized medieval European starter nation followed by a dynastic era Chinese nation then a feudal Japanese nation... what the fuck else were people supposed to think? Sure you sprinkled in a few modern items and pop culture nods and had mysterious ancient mechs to fight from the start but that's still pretty par for the course for fantasy games like BOTW which you totally didn't use as a template. That's not a failure on the players part to understand the setting. That was either an overt choice by the devs to lie by omission for the first two years setting up a pointless bait and switch, or (and lets be honest here) they had no solid roadmap and got bored with the fantasy setting considering all of their other games are more modern or straight up scifi and that's what they're comfortable with so they continuously revised, rewrote, and flat out made it up as they went along. But that can't admit that, they have to pretend like this was the plan all along and we were supposed to somehow anticipate things like the rollerblading genius blacksmith DJ in Jorts and the Archon with a flying Suzuki powered by ancient dragon magic because the dragons in that little corner of the world were less like the sort of mythical beasts encountered in the first 3 areas but were actually advanced humanoids that were trying to build a space elevator.

Depends on how well the tech fits the setting. Right now it doesn't look that different from Fontaine's whimsical industrial revolution magicpunk aesthetic, but we haven't seen much so far and they did basically warn us in that stream to expect the worst.
