Well there are 2 ways. The dumb way is to grind enough levels - despite what other anons told you levels do matter, not only because of the stats that they provide but also because the crest combat buffs scale with levels. That said, leveling is the least efficient way to gain power (at least until late game).
The smart way would be to buy 3 crests from the shop in the capital city after you've spoken the the king - you'll need fire, thunder and wind ones. These + you highest bonus atk items should give you enough damage to kill the 33 hp scythe boss in the second mine. This will give you some good items and most importantly a smithing recipe book. After that you can go the the tentacle forest (either use salt or just kill the tentacles outright, you should have barely enough damage at this point). Loot the items there and collect the new ore and you should have enough stats.
