In Gene Wolfe's Latro series, the MC is a Roman so he doesn't quite know the 'correct' name of places and gods. Sparta sounds a lot like the greek word σπαρτον (sparton) which meant rope. Hence Latro calls Sparta Rope and Spartans Ropemakers. Some etymologists claim Sparta actually does take its name from said word as sort of a slang catch all for the Lacedaemonian townships that made up that country.
Besides that, in the novel, Apollo is the Shining God, Demeter is the Great Mother, etc.
