I thought about that 'glass half full/empty' thing a while back. Unrelated to your subject, but I figured out something. The glass is considered as being 'half full' if it is being filled, but 'half empty' if in the process of emptying. In other words, progress is naturally optimistic, whereas regression is pessimistic.

I dunno what to call them, but they're certainly quite ubiquitous. You get the strong feeling that one is pulling the weight of many, with the way the tone of the thread changes when an old OC is brought up.
