Digimon started out as a V-pet tamagotchi-esque series, so actual shit has unironically always been a big part of it, since you needed to clean your critter's poop and all, like a real pet. As a result, Digimon like these became a thing, basically comedy relief joke monsters that your pet evolved into as a punishment for you being shit at the game.
