There's a whole lot of science involved with scamming people and it's all kinds of crazy fucked up. I remember learning the very first thing most of them do is make the scam obvious to anyone who's smart. That prevents that person from engaging with the scammer any further, and stops them from wasting their time with someone they can't carry the scam out to completion with. By making a scam obviously stupid and fake, they self-select their targets when only the people potentially dumb enough to fall for it will continue past the first step.

There's a guy I follow on Twitter who regularly retweets posts from people who get scammed by the most obvious shit. One of the dumbest ones I've seen is someone pretending to be a celebrity, and selling membership cards to their "fan club" with obviously shopped images of a celebrity holding one of these cards, and people who lost like $100 a pop buying them lol.
