I always heard it originated in UK music magazines in the late 80s when they were being mocked compared to alternative rock bands who were more interesting on stage. Apparently some guy has been claiming since 2016 to have invented it in 1991 referring to the effects pedals, but people claim to have seen it in lost articles older than that. The Wikipedia article mentions both origins though, so I won't argue it.
