Puritans are a sect of Calvinists. And they are important because they rebelled against our king and caused him to get killed/his son exiled. This abolished the concept of divine rule forever here, which they opposed, seeing it as too 'catholic' and the king as 'popish'. This reflects the anti-divine rule we discussed in the Americans a few posts earlier. That is the key thread at work here.

Puritan is also used as a generic verb meaning a style of moralising. Regardless, it is the same anti-human, puritan-like anti-alcohol, anti-virile, castrating matronly control and eternal virginity.
