They'll likely keep making hardware just because there's no reason to not keep making hardware but yeah it's increasingly hard to ignore how much more money Xbox makes, despite XSXS selling nowhere near as much as PS5.
It's impossible for big studios/publishers to scale down. Nintendo's avoided doing that to the point their main weakness is that they're always basically on a hiring spree because they're catching up to labor demands. But when your games cost as much as it costs Rockstar to make GTAV or RDR2 and your games make a fraction of what GTA5 or RDR2 make? The horizontal multiplat movement is basically the only real play left.
The console market has hit a functional ceiling. People will want their COD+sports machine but Gen Z and Gen Alpha do not/did not produce hobbyist gamers at an equivalent rate to millennials and Gen X; younger cohorts get into gaming and immediately gravitate towards live service titles, Roblox, Fortnite, etc. The most requested holiday/birthday gift among gen alpha is Fortnite/Roblox currency. They want social platforms. The live service market is also pretty much ossified, there have been basically no major movements since 2021, just flavors of the month.
Even Nintendo is consciously making sure they're introducing young blood at the developer and consumer level, it's why they're so focused on multimedia pushes, e.g. Super Nintendo World, the Mario movies and now the Zelda movies, because you can't grow if you're not getting new people to buy Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, etc. and buy into your ecosystem.
