Series would've worked better if the protag had zero interest in the girl but needed up put up a front by having her around in some way. Where they both pretend to be a couple just to put on a show and never showing their true selves.
Then eventually their true selves start to peer through but they can't tell what shows of affection are real or fake.
Then eventually the protag has no reason to put on a show anymore or needs to hire someone else and that starts to complicate things. i.e. drama.
