Many countries have expressed concerns over the U.S. announcement on July 22 of its decision to withdraw yet again from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) after its reentry two years ago.
The spokesperson of the Chinese foreign ministry said that the U.S. had long failed to meet payments on its contributions before pulling out of UNESCO for the third time, and denounced such actions as unbecoming of a world power.
Even France, one of the founding states of UNESCO and host country, expressed regret at the U.S. decision to withdraw.
The Russian permanent delegate a.i. to UNESCO said that the basis of the organization is cooperation among the nations in all branches of education, science, culture and information, and continued that the U.S.’ decision to withdraw from UNESCO is deplorable and will entail political and financial consequences within the organization.
