Could blame early access for not having every feature planned readily available, but the tradition of grinding is self evident that grind for the sake of more grind isn't its intended purpose. It works as a gate right now to show you, "you're shit right now, and you can only have chickens and cows, but you could have a pretty cool ferret in a couple hours". But when I last tried it, crafting a slightly better ball than the last ball was ludicrously expensive in time spent getting it than the percentage it promised. If the power you gain doesn't feel exponential in terms of acquiring those resources, then games at least rely on something like an actual story to get invested in and being given really good benefits for following that story and side missions.
but I'm guessing right now it's just padding because they need to actually finish the game, and the ARK formula calls for an eternal grind rather than a story balanced one.
