Back in the day when you had to work with single threads and megabytes of memory, only top autist using very clever and efficient programming techniques could squeeze new features out of the graphics, and the same autistic passion spilled over to game design. Now that hardware is cheap and plentiful, they can just hire a giant team of minimally competent plebs using the coding equivalent of Tonka toys to cram a bunch of shit in without polish with the more is better mindset. Perfect example is Portal 1 vs 2, former was a bear perfect two hour experience polished to a mirror shine, latter crammed in all kinds of new features and zany antics that it would literally interrupt gameplay repeatedly to show off because some retards wanted to make sure the part they made got noticed. It was also just generally worse level design that could leave you running around without direction looking where to go next. And those are still both good games, now compare the thoughts put into Doom vs generic ZOG propaganda military shooter #1488 that has a team the size of an aircraft carrier crew and is forgotten the second it releases.
