Hello, here is the answer.
The hebrews/Israelites were put under strict rules so that Jesus Christ (the savior of the world) could be born into a clean, holy, God worshipping people. That's why they were 'chosen' to have a intermediate relationship with God.
As you can read in the old testament, it really was a struggle to keep them righteous. Many did not follow the rules and were kicked out. Sometimes most of them rebelled, other times they needed to be reminded by miracles and prophets and God making himself known.
God even made sure Mary never sinned so that Jesus could be born to a holy mother.

During Jesus's life he overcame many of the trials the Israelite's initially failed, they are super strong parallels all through out the old testament to the actions of Jesus in the new Testament.

After Jesus we do not need to follow strict rules (insert them here) because God came to us, the Word of God (Jesus Christ) made man, to guide us with his church. To follow the teachings of God and to develop a relationship with God and to let us chose eternal life.

[PS. don't be confused with today's '''''jews/israelities''''' they are pretenders]
