The woman's character in the original was neurotic and had a frail constitution. It makes total sense that she'd become catatonic, and made the movie really good, because duane jones, an old school black, had to look after this person who was basically of no help. Carrying dead weight is what makes the movie work, and it happens repeatedly.
>johnny carries barbra by defending her
>ben carries Barbra the rest of the film
>tom carries his girlfriend judy
>harry and Helen carry Karen
>ben carries the group
It also shows that in carrying others, eventually, they slow you down leading to your downfall and/or you abandoning them.
>barbra leaves johnny to die rather than fight to save him
>ben leaves barbra to wander into the zombie horde
>helen carries karen until she kills her
>ben carries harry until harry turns on him
>tom carries judy until she gets them killed in the fireball
I forget who sprays the truck with gas and winds up lighting it all on fire with the torch, but i want to say it is tom.

My favorite bit is near the end when ben sees the gas key labled and dangling on the nail in the basement. Peak irony.

The original was better than the remake. Whatever savini did right was a shadow of what the original did better. The remake was like so many local theater renditions of classic broadway shows, where they decide to spice it up and remake the paradigm. It's fun, but the original is better.

Also, shaun of the dead was the best zombie film in 40 years. It's just more fun than the other stuff.
