The best alternative I've found so far is musk sticks (an Australian lolly), but I bought a gel flask and I'm going to experiment with "maple flavoured syrup" too. It basically looks like a commercial carb blend from the ingredients, so I think it might be a winner.
I want to bring sports drinks, but my water bottle leaks a bit when I jam it into my running belt and I don't want to get sticky.
