we don't have to waste any energy on transitions that an ideally playing enemy could force a checkmate, merely deny them any progress into that direction, and simultanesouly maximize the number of expandible game trees that allow for forced mate to be taken at any time, but don't take them because ending the game would mean the rules change and we don't have option to win.
