Ayatollah Khamenei Reportedly Flees Iran Amid Escalating Unrest, Arrives in Moscow
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — In a dramatic turn of events, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly fled Iran and arrived in Moscow late Tuesday night, according to multiple diplomatic sources and unverified images circulating on social media.
The unexpected move comes amid weeks of mounting civil unrest, crippling economic sanctions, and a wave of violent clashes between security forces and protesters in several major cities. Reports from Tehran suggest that a rift within the Revolutionary Guard leadership, combined with unprecedented street demonstrations, left the clerical establishment on the verge of collapse.
Russian state media has yet to confirm the Ayatollah’s arrival, but two senior Western diplomats in the region told the Associated Press that a convoy of Iranian officials landed at Moscow’s Vnukovo International Airport under tight security shortly before midnight local time. Eyewitnesses described a heavily guarded motorcade leaving the airport’s diplomatic terminal and heading toward an undisclosed government residence outside the city.
Iranian state TV has not broadcast any images of Khamenei since Monday, fueling speculation about his sudden disappearance from public view. An official statement released by the office of President Ebrahim Raisi dismissed the reports as “fabricated rumors spread by foreign enemies to sow chaos.”
Meanwhile, thousands of Iranians gathered outside the closed gates of Khamenei’s official residence in Tehran early Wednesday, demanding accountability and the formation of an interim council to fill the power vacuum.
The Kremlin has declined to comment on the alleged arrival.
This is a developing story.
