I think it's funny how in old concept art the lands between used to be connected to a bigger landmass, which would give a tangible sensation of a bigger world, but then they decided to make them into an island, which feels very retarded when you think about it for 5 seconds.
They prolly wanted to avoid invisible walls and conveniently placed cliffs as the limits of the open world but that came with a price because the lands between as an island is very retarded if you care about some sort of realism or a good source to suspend your disbelief without ignoring too much stupidity.
