Dirt (or rather Fast in US) is generally harder on the horse’s legs and you see a lot more dirt tracks in the US due to the tradition of maiden races for horses always being on dirt, and with the Kentucky Derby being a dirt track too it doesn’t have the negative misconception as in Japan. It’s also just more common due to the landscape America has that allows for better dirt tracks. On the other hand though, Japan only does turf courses because it causes less injury and allows for races to occur even after it rains (its rains alot on an island-who knew?). It’s a whole thing but short version too is that japan copied European horse racing and they love their turf racing, so it’s more favored than dirt.
