The Overton Window has shifted. Nobody even on the Left can really defend the barbarian invasions anymore, at least insofar as illegals go; they need to defend working legal immigrants and ally with big business to achieve advancements on demographics now.

My first guess would be that he's pulling the old Democrat trick where border security and amnesty are tied to each other, effectively requiring every spending bill to prevent illegal immigration to be tied to an amnesty on those who have already illegally immigrated. However, the 1BBB already passed so much border security spending that any further spending would be meaningless and Bernie might even oppose that even if he's making big statements in public.

As a result, my conclusion is that he's trying to take advantage of the Epstein crisis to get disaffected young men who are against illegal immigration to think Democrats will get serious about illegal immigration. It's not actually about legislative action but about deception ahead of midterms and 2028. They need to hoodwink the voters into thinking Democrats will be serious about continuing Trump's mass deportations and this is one part of that.
