This is actually a political issue right now irl, congress members have been using military procurement as a way to funnel government money into their districts for a while and it's actually become a liability. Current admin is talking about limiting it to keep costs down.
If you go to washington DC and take the subway near the pentagon, they've got advertisements for jet engines and missile targeting systems on the billboards to try and influence what gets adopted by the military. That said, this is often blown out of proportion because in practice most of the US's military hardware for the last 40 years really has been excellent, but there was le funny movie called Pentagon Wars that basically slandered the M2 Bradley in an admittedly very funny scene about bureaucrats arbitrarily demanding more and more stupid shit be stapled onto the vehicle. In reality the M2 is an amazing vehicle, and in battle individual M2s could dust Soviet tanks easily, as we saw in Iraq and more recently in the Ukraine, but the Pentagon Wars bit is still a funny commentary on the ridiculous antics that US military procurement get up to.
