It's okay, I'll use the metaphor I use when teaching. Imagine a boulder sitting in your garden that you want to move. It's big and heavy. A Summoner puts the effort into his preparation for minimal aether use at casting, the equivalent of building a small crane or a pulley system or some sort of lever to tip the boulder into a wheelbarrow to cart it away. A Red Mage is almost entirely endoaetheric, using the internal aether he respirates naturally, so he works out every day lifting weights until he's strong enough to just lift the boulder and carries it off. A Black Mage draws in copious amounts of aether from outside at the moment of or immediately prior to casting and his or her excellence is determined by how much he can control and regulate, so the equivalent would be being so scary you can bully a bunch of local children into working together to move the boulder for you even if some of them get stubbed toes or bruised fingers in the process, not your problem. Yes it's an oversimplification and no it's not entirely accurate on the fine points, but it's a good first step to understanding the major schools of offensive magic.
