Wits is what helps your Uma turn on her brain and figure out how to escape from the pack whenever she's not in first place out of all the others using the same strategy
Speed will only help you in the last leg of the race, and Power will only help you if your Uma has enough intelligence to try and get out of the pack in the first place
Between all of that and the other benefits like skill activation and stopping you from getting Rushed, it's not wrong to say Wit is the controller of everything, especially in longer races
