This is my main problem with Shuji.
I think I am at odds with most of his haters, because I actually think his characterization before he 'leaves' for the first time is decent and well defined. He is aloof and eccentric but empathetic. He has his mind set on a serious goal, but seems to indulge a bit, with things like painting, his robot who he treats like a pet, and statements like "Nyaan is fun too!". People shit on him for killing Shiiko which I get, but they seem to skip over him essentially seeing her ghost off and framing it like a long overdue release for her (still feel bad for her kid though).
But then the final episode hits. And you learn just enough regarding the mystery behind him to make it seem like we probably never knew him at all up until this point.
He's apparently been damning whole universes over and over for the sake of his love for a character we never see him interact with. He doesn't seem particularly chill at all and doesn't seem like the kind of character who would care about things like indulging or being empathetic with others when he sees them all as temporary things anyways. It reframes things like episode seven, which makes it seem like he's learning about the true nature of the Zeknova at the same time as everyone else, as a big performance, since he clearly has done this all before.
It makes it seem like he likely saw Machu and Nyaan as stepping stones to reaching his goals, and considering he's done this at least a dozen times, not very significant stepping stones at that. It really sours me on his whole character, which is a problem, because the ending essentially reframes this entire setting as him failing to properly cope with Lalah's feelings on her behalf.

Why the fuck was Shuji characterized as this "It's fun so I don't mind!" wistful spirit for most of his on screen appearances when it's ultimately revealed that he's on a terrible mission and has to keep reliving the experience of killing the girl he loves to, in his words, protect her?
Why does look and sound just as confused as everyone else at the zeknova in episode 7 if he's apparently done this countless times?
