Au contraire. The use of specie (physical gold/silver) is exactly what the declining Roman empire did NOT do. They removed the silver from the coins. They turned their currency from real money into worthless fiat, then they passed price control laws (Diocletian) to try in vain to combat the inflation caused by their ever increasing supply of fiat caused.
Real money (commodity money) cannot be counterfeited. Gold in particular is very difficult to fake due to it's high density (19.3g/cm3) yellow color, malleability and resistance to acids and corrosion.
Silver is not as distinctive, but is stil readily identifiable, even with low tech, particularly if in the form of coins where one has known good specimens.
Roman inflation could only happen because the STOPPED using real commodity money and went to a fiat based system.
