Look at forays, at deep dungeons, at criterions... They don't do well with maing totally divorced content that doesn't fit into their formula, it becomes stagnant and abandoned. What they need to do is crunch the difficulty range so that the floor is higher and the ceiling lower across the board, pushing more of the existing content into a comfortable middle ground where experienced players can still find some challenge in the mundane stuff, and casual players can more reasonably consider getting into the harder stuff. Basically, the formula itself needs to change, and it never will.
