I think it was because what we call paganism today was invented in the early 1900s by a crackpot called Gerald Gardner. It bares no relation to the paganism that e.g. the ancient celts worshipped.
My best friend in middle school was from a "practising pagan" family and he does truly resent virtue and normalcy. Gets overly-excited for Marvel/Anime, buys tacky dragon/fantasy figurines. Started an onlyfans, has a "polycule" with 3-5 other people. The whole family was like this.
So the weirdness comes first and then the paganism comes second as a way to cope with being considered an outcase by society.
