Six Injured, Including Child, in Russian Strike on Central Ukrainian City
Six people, including a child, were injured in a Russian air attack on the city of Smila in Ukraine's central Cherkasy region on Saturday, part of a massive overnight barrage across the country, Ukrainian officials said.
Ihor Taburets, the head of the Cherkasy regional military administration, said the strike damaged civilian infrastructure. "According to preliminary data, three nine-story buildings were damaged," Taburets stated. "The local college of the National University of Food Technologies was also significantly destroyed."
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, where they extinguished two fires that broke out as a result of the attack. A total of 70 residents were evacuated from the damaged apartment blocks. Rescuers also freed a man who had become trapped in an elevator shaft.
An operational headquarters has been set up to manage the response and assess the full extent of the damage. The attack on Smila was part of Russia's largest single air assault on Ukraine since the war began, involving more than 500 missiles and drones launched at multiple regions.
