Fishing is actually retardly easy to get into. Buy a cheap spinner rod or push button rod, buy some jigs with artificial worms and some crank lures, some hooks of various sizes, weights of various sizes, bobbers, and bait. Do a little research on spots and regulations and have a license. That's it, you're set for about 80% of all freshwater fishing in north America.
And contrary to popular belief, you can easily catch trout in small mountain streams and rivers on a normal spinner rod with light tackle, you don't *need* a fly rod. I've caught trout in the same habitat with both types of rods.
