It's more like the devs were too ambitious by wanting to introduce too many characters and world building details at once. Everything felt convoluted. It'd have been better if they included a Part 1 character that was underutilized as a member of the new trio to bridge things over. Also, reduced the number of Shus or took a simple straightforward approach more similar to Roxas's prologue in KH2. Because it felt like the story only started to get good once the characters understood they were in a rigged simulation.

I'd say the worst consequence of this is that gacha players aren't the forgiving kind. Even if the story does get better later, a bad beginning is enough to bore them and make them drop the game. That's how the devs failed to attract new players like they expected to. This is different from older players who can chose to put up with arcs or game directions they dislike because they're too attached to the game.
